Matchy Matchy at the Golden Globes

Q: I noticed that a lot of celebrities were matching their purses to their dresses on the red carpet at the Golden Globes. I always thought this was a no-no? Is this a trend, and how can I pull it off without looking tacky?

Matchy Matchy has been a trend that has been popping up on the runways and it is something that we are now seeing on the red carpet. The Matchy Matchy look has never been one of our favorite looks, because it can be hard to master without looking tacky. We saw that Zooey Deschanel, Jessica Alba, Octavia Spencer and Natalie Portman all matched their purse color to their dress.

Charlize Theron matched her jeweled headband to her jeweled piece on her dress. Angelina Jolie took this trend a step further by matching her red lips to her dress and clutch--and Tilda Swinton mastered the monochromatic look with a matching blue blazer and dress.

So although this trend can be hard to pull off, these stars show that there are many ways you can do the matchy matchy look. One major thing to keep in mind is to keep the pieces that you are matching in sophisticated shapes and cuts. Take a cue from Angelina and try pairing bright red lips with a bright red blazer. By pairing structured pieces of the same color or pattern, it can help to keep the look sophisticated.
Work on pairing same color pieces that are unexpected. For example instead of wearing a belt, purse and shoe that match; try pairing your colored jeans with an over sized clutch in the same hue. Try playing around with the matchy matchy look, keeping these tips in mind and see what cool combos you can come up with!

How to be Comfortably Stylish this Holiday Season

My husband and I are always conflicted about what to wear to holiday parties. While most of them are informal--you still want to look great. The biggest problem--being comfortable too. The biggest holiday style dilemma--looking good, but being comfortable (so I can overindulge a little). Do you have any holiday style suggestions?

Looking fabulous while really getting to enjoy those delicious holiday hors d'oeuvres and meals can be tricky--but luckily some forgiving fall fashion trends allow you to simply look great and allow you to relax and indulge in that extra piece of pie.

First start with the delicious offering that flexible fabrics have to offer: whisper weight knits, cashmere, cotton/rayon and spandex. Then think of forgiving styles that will allow you to relax: tunics, ponchos, kimono inspired cuts, empire waist, ruched tops, asymmetrical cuts, leggings and wraps.

Don't forget that accessorizing will help bring your comfy attire up to par for the holiday. Try adding sequins, pair a sequin jacket or top with that comfy skirt or maybe a sequin skirt, tights and ankle booties with a loose top. Or try lots of jewels and layer jewelry with dresses.

Guys, the best thing for you is to layer, although we love the tucked in look, it is not very forgiving after you have eaten a big meal. If you are headed to a casual affair try wearing a nice sweater over an un-tucked button down. This will look great with a dark wash denim pant. Layering will also work with a more formal look. You could add a sports coat over the sweater combo. Or pair a vest over a button-down and then top with a blazer.

Don't be afraid of mixing prints and patterns to create a cool look. If you have a striped sweater, try a plaid button down underneath. Also try other fabrics like velvet or tweed blazers. Have fun with it, but just make sure one color runs throughout the pieces you have paired.

Customer Service Expectations

Q: Dear Kim's Closet,
I wanted to share my shopping experience last night. I called a department store and a very polite person (not a recording) answered the phone and transferred me to the department I was trying to reach and they answered right away. They were very helpful and held the dress I wanted to purchase. When I arrived at the store, they went out of their way to help me and I left with the dress, very happy and enjoyed my very positive experience. Driving home I noticed a popular mass retailer and thought I would stop and look at shoes. There was an employee stocking shelves. The cart was in my way of the shoes I was trying to look at and I struggled to reach them. The employee did not acknowledge me or move the cart. I left feeling down. Do you think I should contact both stores and share my experiences?

The lack of customer service seems to be a problem that a lot of people are having now a days. We feel that companies should be held responsible for their customer service and what is happening day-to-day in their stores. People go shopping and expect to enjoy their experience, it is not right when employees spoil that for customers.
On the other end when you do experience great service, why not tell the store? It is great to show these retailers that you appreciate what they do. It is defintley okay and worth contacting both of these stores. Write or email them a letter and tell them about what you experienced. You should send one to the local manager and one to the headquarters. Thanks for sharing!

A Budget-Friendly Halloween For The Whole Family

It is that time of year again for costume shopping. This year things have changed for us, my husband got laid off a couple of months ago, so we do not have much money for our usual $50-$100 costume purchases per family member. My husband and I have a party to attend and will need costumes and my kids will also need costumes. Any ideas for us that are more budget friendly?

Although Halloween is a lot of fun, it can also be stressful money-wise once you invest in a onetime use costume. But as long as you spend more time on the craft part and making things yourself, you can save a lot of bang for your buck. I always like to base costumes off of TV and Movie characters, not only can they be fun but people can always guess who you are and love it when they do!

WomenPan Am (for less than $56)

Start this costume by purchasing a basic white button-down and pencil skirt, or use ones that you already own and don't mind changing the color, you can also pick up a basic pillbox hat from a costume store or online. Check your local budget friendly retailers, we found ours at Target and Charlotte Russe.
Use RIT dye to color your new items the classic Pan Am blue. Some tips before you dye, make sure to remove any labels and buttons you don't intend on turning blue.
Print out the Pan Am logo and mount on thin cardboard, then pin it to the hat or to your shirt.
End the outfit with your favorite black pumps and some white gloves.

Black Swan (for less than $40)

Start with a basic black tank, we got ours from Old Navy.
Make a no sew tutu out of black tulle and at least a "3/4 inch wide elastic band, we got ours from Joann's fabrics. Lay the Tulle out in half and cut "3 inch strips making sure to cut horizontally so that the fold seam is included in the cut. Measure out your elastic around your waist and leave enough extra to be able to tie around the back.
Once you have all of the strips cut, loop each strip around the elastic and tighten into a knot until you have enough to cover around your whole body.
Use the Boa to add feather embellishments around the neckline and top of the waist. Hot glue gun a piece to the neckline of the tank and hot glue gun a piece along the front of the waistband of the tutu.
Finish off with with opaque tights, use silver and black eyeliner to create the Black Swan look, top your head with a tiara from the costume store and wear plain black flats on you're feet.

MenSons of Anarchy (for less than $28)

Start with a pair of jeans and a plain black or white T-shirt that you already own. You will also need a plain black baseball hat.
Purchase a faux leather vest, we found ours on Eastbay.com
Print out the Sons of Anarchy logos and labels onto heat transfer paper. They can be ironed onto the vest. Print one logo big enough for the back of the vest and one small enough for the hat. Plus labels for the front of the vest.
Top the outfit off with your white sneakers or boots, and a chain wallet and some rings if you have them.

Swamp People (for less than $30)

Start with a pair of jeans and a plain black or white T-shirt that you already own
Go to an outdoor store and purchase a camo vest or life jacket and a camo hat, or buy the life jacket and hat online.
We found this toy alligator on Amazon, but you could also use an inflatable gator. Carry your catch on a string for the night--And don't forgot the Cajun accent!

Kids
Red Riding Hood (for less than $30)

Start at your local fabric store and purchase a few yards of cheap red tulle and cheap red fabric for a cape. An employee should be able to help on yards you need, based on your child's size.
Use the tulle to make a no sew tutu (like the one in the black swan costume).
Use the red fabric to create a cape, here is a great tutorial.
Purchase a little basket from a costume store and she can also use it to collect candy through the night
Finish off the outfit with a basic white T-shirt, black shoes and tights if its chilly.

Captain America (for less than $34)

Start with a basic navy long sleeve T-shirt and sweat pants, we found ours at Old Navy and Walmart.
For the shield you can use a Frisbee, we found this basic white one on Amazon.
Use red spray paint and white acrylic to paint the shield and the strips and stars on the shirt. Use masking tape to help you keep in the lines. Use duct tape to make a handle on the back of the Frisbee.
Boots and gloves can be purchased online or in costume stores.
Use face paint to paint a mask on your child.

Friends, we are always reminding one another to get ourselves on the list and take some time for fun with friends. We have two ideas that will fill your day with fun, while filling your hearts with joy. Then we have surprised you with a budget conscious way to relax after all that giving back.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

It is time to get out - go and give back with your friends. You and all your friends are all unsuspectingly going to make the day of a stranger. Here are some ideas:

Going to the movies? How about buying an extra ticket and asking the teller to give it to the person that is next in line
Out for a bite to eat? Here is one of my favorites: pick up the tab of an elderly person who is dining alone. Tell your server to only tell the person that they have been touched by a random act of kindness. I have seen it positively impact: the waitress, all your friends at the table and the unsuspecting person who looks around and wonders who it was
Day of shopping? Before you and your friends head out, gather clothing that you have not worn in awhile and take it to a women’s shelter, homeless shelter, or to a family in need

Not every act of kindness has to involve money. If you like what someone is wearing; compliment them. If you see someone who may look down and out, acknowledge them; smile and say hello. Yes, it is truly remarkable how a smile and a hello can simply change someone’s day.

FRIENDS GIVING BACK

It is great to have a day with your friends, but I think you will find it twice as rewarding if you are spending the day together giving back. For those of you who are on a tight budget – it is a great way to spend the day out and about without spending a dime. You can marry your interests to an organization that fits your likes and talents. There are many organizations that offer a variety of services from providing love and assistance to the elderly, to caring for animals, to rebuilding the community (and so many more!)

The weather here in Ohio has been unbelievably hot and humid this summer. I am always uncomfortable every summer, I always suffer from chaffing when I wear dresses and my shorts usually ride up. Plus showing the tops of my arms is a no-no for me. Do you have any tips on how to look good in the summer in the midst of this heat wave?

We understand your pain of being uncomfortable in the summer, sometimes it can be down right brutal. Most of us want the least amount of fabric touching us as possible. But sometimes it is actually better to keep more covered up using natural light-weight fabrics, it helps keep the sun from touching your skin.

Having shorts riding up is one of the most annoying things about summer attire, not to mention embarrassing, when you have to stop every few minutes to unhinge your shorts. Our suggestion is Bermudas. The length keeps them from ridingup, but still keeps you cool in the heat. Try a cut-off denim pair, which is one of the hottest trends right now. So after chatting with a photographer friend of mine we came up with a great "fiesta" themed space by spray painting white plastic furniture. I am a healthy woman, I exercise, eat healthy and take very good care of myself. I am a size 12/14. Right now I am struggling with body image and confidence. I am 31 years old and my confidence is slipping away each and every time I turn on the TV or pick up a magazine. I watch shows like The Bachelor and wonder if they chose me to be the Bachelorette how the audience and tabloids would go crazy calling me fat. I am so tired of hearing men refer to me as 'thick' and the media referring to me as a plus size and the Jersey Shore people calling girls smaller then me Hippos. Can you offer me any suggestions on how to try and put the media in perspective, get my self confidence back and not see myself as fat?

Corrine: Body image and self confidence can be such a roller coaster ride and we understand how difficult it can be in a media world pounding women and girls full of delusions about what is beautiful. First let me commend you for your eating and workout habits, this is a critical component to health and happiness so keep it up!

When it comes to watching TV, picking up magazines and being bombarded with images that often define beauty as thin, tall, Caucasian, perfect teeth and flowing hair, you are bound to be challenged. Shows like The Bachelor also do not help when it is very clear unless you're in a hot tub with a string bikini, you would and could never be liked by this group of men, let alone be on the show.

Media does a poor job of celebrating women in general. If one celebrity is caught without makeup or with their hair disheveled, the marquee immediately reads "Caught without makeup, Oh look at her!" as if to say hurry, look, lets bring her down and diminish her self esteem as soon as possible. We condemn bullying with young children, but as adults we bully one another everyday with regards to size, age, wrinkles..on and on..

Corrine, start first by considering the source. Most of the media you are seeing is driven by an ulterior motive: to make money. Commercials and advertisements are trying to sell you perfection. These jeans will give you the rump of a 20 year old, this cream will take years off your face and these pills will help you lose 20lbs. Corrine also remember another critical fact: air brushing. Many of the people/models/celebrities that you see in these ads are not always cellulite free, wrinkle free and 6' tall.

So how do we everyday women reassure ourselves that we are beautiful and try not to define ourselves based on what the media and this fast paced world defines as beautiful? It is hard; there is no doubt about it. Confidence is key and a critical component for setting the tone for what 'Corrine's' definition of beauty is. What makes you stand out in a crowded room? Maybe it is your style, smile or your outgoing personality. What makes Corrine beautiful? Maybe it is your volunteering, your writing, your patience, your unconditional love of others; the list can go on and on.

A: Charlotte, I can tell you without hesitation to hand write and mail all your thank you notes. It truly is a lost art. It is also an opportunity for you to be creative and express yourself, especially when it is a note to a friend or a relative. You should take a moment and send a thank you for a gift, or if you are a guest at someone's home or simply to say thank you for a kind gesture.

With regards to a post interview thank you--I cannot tell you how many business owners have told me that many times they don't even get a thank you after an interview and they are shocked. Most of the time the thank you comes as an email from candidates, but the interviewers are truly intrigued and impressed when they receive a simple hand written thank you. It is an opportunity to express additional interest in the position and showcase your attention to detail. While the stationary doesn't have to be super formal, select a solid tone and stick with a dark pen.

Sophia, Kimberly and Beth were happy to share their secrets to long, healthy hair. We were surprised to find they both had many of the exact same tips and secrets as to how they grew their hair out and keep it healthy.

Their top tips:

1. Do not wash your hair every day.

2. Use a blow dryer when only necessary.

3. Try your best not to use heating tools every day.

4. Be careful about how often you are coloring your hair.

5. If your hair is wet, use a wide toothed comb starting from the ends, and then continue through the rest of your hair.

Once you have a great foundation in place, it is time to have fun with clothing. Since you have slim legs show them off with slim cut pants, leggings and jeggings. Forgot the myth that horizontal stripes make you appear bigger, that is not true! Stick to stripes that are smaller to minimize the widening effect. Makeup Guide For Your Daughters

Do you have any advice as to how to talk to them, or advice on how to guide them with makeup tips?

A: First and foremost, please encourage your children to respect their skin. This begins with making sure they maintain a daily cleansing and moisturizing routine. Please encourage them to use a moisturizer that has an SPF for daily use, and full sunscreen when they are spending the day outside. Fresh--that is the best word to describe to them how their makeup should look and feel. Unless they are experiencing breakouts and need cover-up--I would not encourage foundation. To keep their look fresh, show them how to apply soft mascara, a light hue lip-gloss and maybe a hint of color on the cheeks. This will satisfy their craving to wear makeup--but keep their look young with just a hint of color.
